What to expect

Covent Garden began as London's first modern square, laid out by Inigo Jones in the 1630s. Traders set up stalls here in the 17th century, and the neoclassical market hall was built in 1830. The wholesale market moved out in 1974, and the buildings reopened as shops and restaurants soon after. Today it is one of central London's busiest pedestrian areas.

The heart of it is the covered market hall, where craft stalls such as the Apple Market sell jewellery, gifts and clothes, with Jubilee Hall on the south side. Outside the portico, street performers work timetabled slots, so there is nearly always a show. Around the square you will find the Royal Opera House, St Paul's Church, known as the Actors' Church, and the London Transport Museum in a Victorian flower market hall.
