What to expect

A market has been held in Greenwich since the 14th century, and the present one dates from a charter of 1700 that allowed two weekly markets. The Grade II listed buildings around it were put up between 1827 and 1833 to a design by Joseph Kay, and the covered roof was replaced in 2016.

It sits in the middle of Greenwich's town centre, among Georgian and Victorian streets, and close to the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory. The covered setting means you can browse in any weather, with stalls and small shops around the edges. The stalls change from day to day, so the mix of crafts and food varies with the day you come. Most visitors spend half an hour to an hour, often combined with lunch.
