What to expect

Hamleys was started in 1760 by William Hamley as Noah's Ark, in High Holborn, and is listed as the world's oldest toy shop. The Regent Street branch opened in 1881, and the flagship has stood at nos. 188 to 196 since 1981. It holds royal warrants, first granted by Queen Mary in 1938.

The shop covers seven floors with more than 50,000 lines of toys, each floor devoted to a different type: the ground floor has soft toys, including enormous animals. It is loud, busy and fun for children, and also easy for adults without a child to browse. It is at its busiest in the weeks before Christmas.
