What to expect

Marie Tussaud, a French wax sculptor, opened her museum in London in 1835 on Baker Street. By the 1880s space was short, and in 1884 the galleries moved to a purpose-built home on Marylebone Road, where they still are. The Chamber of Horrors, which showed models of murderers, was already an early drawing card.

Today the museum is run by Merlin Entertainments and is a crowd-pleaser rather than a quiet gallery. You walk through rooms of waxwork royals, historical figures, film and sports stars, and the museum also includes a dark ride, The Spirit of London, which opened in 1993. The former London Planetarium has been part of the building since 2006. Plan on about two hours.
