What to expect

Selfridges was founded by the American retailer Harry Gordon Selfridge, who opened the Oxford Street store in 1909. It was designed by Daniel Burnham, who also designed Marshall Field's in Chicago, and it was one of the first London buildings to use a steel frame. Selfridge wanted shopping to be a pleasure in itself, with soft lighting, music and shoppers treated as guests, and he put the perfume counter at the front of the ground floor.

It is now the second-largest shop in the UK, after Harrods. The entrance is topped with a sculpture by Gilbert Bayes, and the window displays are among the best-known in London. You can walk through fashion floors, beauty halls and the food hall, and the roof has been used for pop-up restaurants and events.
