What to expect

Maltby Street Market grew out of Borough Market traders who rented railway arches in Bermondsey for storage. Monmouth Coffee began selling coffee from its arch in 2009, other traders followed, and in 2011 several traders left Borough to join them. The arches were built between 1836 and 1839 for the London and Greenwich Railway, and trains still run overhead.

The market takes place on a narrow former rope-walk, in the yard of a salvage company, and in the arches beside it, with up to about thirty traders. The emphasis is on takeaway street food, so you eat standing up, with a trader's cardboard tray in hand. It is smaller and calmer than Borough Market, with the sound of trains overhead. Most visitors spend about an hour.
